Second Skin

Finding out that 50 million people engage in MMORPG's really shocked me. At first I found it hard to believe because when we did the survey in class I could not find someone who plays War of Worldcraft nor do any of my friends or family play. But then when I thought about it there are so many more people in the world then those that I know. I personally think it is not possible to fall in love with someone through gaming. That's not saying when they meet eachother and spend time together they may fall in love but not before then. You can't truely fall in love without meeting a person. We have always been told growing up that meeting people online is dangerous and you need to be careful who you talk to. This video is a prime example of that because Kevin said he fell in love with five different gamers and all but one was violent towards him. One even pulled a knife on him. It is one thing to play games like War of Worldcraft because you enjoy to but when it starts to take over your life and becomes your first priority then there is a problem.

  1. I agree that some people on the internet are dangerous, but there are a lot of people out here that are too. One example that comes to mind is my ex boyfriend. I met him through a friend and everything seemed great, but he turned out to be a psycho that beat the crap out of me. There is danger where ever you go. I think one thing that a lot of the social networks should require is that you are over 16 at least. I see too many 13 year olds thinking it's ok to go meet someone random online. Because you're right, you do need to be careful of who you talk to.
As for what you said regarding love online, I think it's possible because I've experienced it.I think that if you truly love someone that it is for their personality, not their looks. With some people online, you can only work off of their personality. Some may be a bit different, but I really do think that talking on skype or the phone shows more of what they are really like. That way they don't have time to think of "the perfect response".
Online dating is not for everyone, but it really has made a lot of people's lives better and happier. We just need to realize that everyone prefers different things and if they want to try meeting some one on the internet than more power to them.

  2. I agree, there is no way to know exactly who you are talking to until you meet them. People can use the internet to create an entire second life to escape their own and that means creating an entirely different persona. A guy could say hes a multi-millionaire, when in reality hes a 38 year old dude living in his mom's basement. The truth is you never really know what you're getting into until you meet someone in person.

  3. I think that you can find love online. I don’t necessarily think it’s the safest or maybe most common way to fall in love but anything can happen. If these people are being there true selves online then it would be much easier to find someone. Some people are social awkward can feel more comfortable to be who they really are online. You can’t find love when you have walls up and so what better place then online. I don’t see any problem with people falling in love online besides you always tend to find it when you least expect it.

  4. I agree with Kayla, in that it is possible to meet someone online and end up falling in love with them. The only thing is that Matt stated is that we don't really know who that person is. Personally I think it's an unsafe bet to just fall in love with someone you have never touched, kissed, or held. It honestly just doesn't make sense to me. When I engage in a relationship I would like to be able to physically be in contact with that person. I feel like these online characters are just fake people. They are falling in love with the virtual character, and not the actual person who created that character. I believe in order to truly fall in love, one needs a realistic engagement/relatinship, not an online one.

  5. I think an online relationship can only get so deep. You can't really know a person until you interact in real life. And it's really dangerous to meet up with people you meet online. They can be anything. The virtual world can be manipulated into anything.
