1984
In 1984 Big Brother is the symbol of "the party" dominance. Big Brother is always watching you, is a commonly used phrase in the novel. This refers to the fact that the people of Oceania are under watch 24/7. They can not think outside Big Brothers core beliefs or will be vaporized for thought crime. The Party install's how everyone in society should think by controling what they know. For instance, Wiston's job is to recreate fact into false information. I think the party has this done in order to keep people froming thinking about how life use to be and also to know that they have complete control. Big Brother is able to say any lie and society believes such because the people know no better. This idea Orwell presents relates directly to our modern world and technology. Clearly the book is much more serious then what occurs in our world today but it is still a problem or situation that should be looked at. Due to technology our private lives can be accessed with a click of a mouse, and to some people that is very frightening. People can post any false information, and although we are not forced to, most people believe whatever they read. This idea relates to Wiston rewriting false information and everyone in society believes it. The internet can invade our privacy and that is where Orwell's ideas and our modern world collide.

Like you said, it's so easy to take someone's information and make it your own. I see people pretending to be others by using their pictures and information all the time on social networking sites. We do it to ourselves. We put the information out there full well knowing what we are doing and shouldn't be surprised when it pops back up. It is scary that anyone can look you up and locate you with the right tools. We can get away from the internet and make it harder for people to find us, but it's difficult. We need credit cards and the internet to do things in our everyday lives. I just think people need to be more careful about what they are putting out there.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Megan, that we should honestly just be alot more careful what we post online. People put their private information online, and then want to fire back and say that they can't believe so many people can see it, then don't post it online!! It is so easy to access anything you want online now, and our society should be aware of that and take precaution before they make the mistake of posting personal information.
ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone we need to be careful with what we put on the internet. Even if you delete something it is still there forever somewhere. Its scary and dangerous.
